Eyes on safety at International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress, supported by FIA Foundation

Safety innovation was a major focus of motorsport safety at the International Council of Motorsport Sciences (ICMS) Annual Congress in Indianapolis, USA, supported by the FIA Foundation.

The ICMS brings together sports, science, medical, and educational professionals working to improve performance and safety in motorsport and share research and innovation with the international motorsport community.

Motorsport safety is a core focus of the FIA Foundation, delivered through funding for FIA technical research, training, medical interventions and circuit improvements. Director North American Office and United Nations Representative Natalie Draisin presented a session on this commitment and long-term investment, entitled ‘FIA Foundation Introduction and its Role in Motor Sport Safety’. “Motorsport shows us that safe systems work,” she shared. “In the 1960s, one in eight Formula 1 events resulted in a fatality, but now, by shifting the responsibility for safety from the driver to the entire system, we are committed to the goal of zero fatalities. Thanks to the work of ICMS and others, we can apply lessons from the world of motorsport so that racecar drivers and regular drivers alike do not die on roads.”
