Sergio Perez joins Mexican Helmet Coalition at Mexican Grand Prix
The Mexican Helmet Coalition, an initiative supported by the FIA Foundation, ITDP Mexico and the Mexican auto club OMDAI put a spotlight on motorcycle safety at the FIA Mexican Grand Prix with F1 racing driver Sergio Perez.
The event included a dedicated Helmet Coalition meeting and a meet-and-greet with Red Bull Racing's Sergio Perez, as well as FIA safety briefings with Sporting Director Tim Malyon and F1 safety car driver Bernd Maylander, discussions with FIA Club OMDAI's President Jorge Abed, and a tour of the Grand Prix facilities before the qualifying stages of the race. The event brought together representatives of the Coalition, including: Daniel Sibaja, Secretary of Mobility for the State of Mexico; Eric Palacio Montano, General Manager Credit Mobility Electra Group; Rafael González, Expansion Director of Italika; and Fundación Aleatica President Juan Bosco.
The Coalition focuses on raising awareness of the importance of safe, certified helmets. With a collaborative approach that includes the public, private, and civil society sectors, the Coalition also highlights the need for public policies that enforce national helmet certification standards to protect motorcyclists across Mexico. The Coalition's mission is particularly urgent given Mexico's road safety landscape. Over the last five years, the number of motorcycles in the country has surged by 89%, with motorcyclists now accounting for more than 4,000 fatalities annually - representing 26% of all road traffic deaths. According to the World Health Organization, a quality helmet, when worn correctly, can reduce the risk of death in a road crash by over six times and lower the risk of severe brain injury by up to 74%. The Coalition aims to spread this critical message, helping motorcyclists make informed choices and advocating for the regulatory support needed to make roads safer.
FIA Foundation Programmes Director Aggie Krasnolucka highlighted the importance of this partnership, saying: "This was a brilliant opportunity to bring together the private, public, civil society, and sports communities to raise the profile of the Helmet Coalition. By joining forces, we can substantially impact road safety and protect the lives of countless motorcyclists. We are grateful to the FIA and the Mexican auto club, OMDAI, for making this such a special event."
