Thailand Helmet Advocacy Initiative launches with AIP Foundation, supported by FIA Foundation

A new programme to address motorcycle rider safety through helmet policy implementation and enforcement strategies in Thailand was launched by the AIP Foundation, supported by the FIA Foundation.

The new Safeguard - Helmet Advocacy Initiative 2024 – 2026 builds on AIP Foundation’s legacy of work with local and national government partners across Thailand to address the country's high motorcycle rider death and injury rate. Motorcycle crashes accounted for 74% of all road traffic deaths in Thailand in 2022, almost double the regional average.  Helmet-wearing rates across the country are critically low: just 8% of children are protected on their journeys, alongside less than a quarter of teenagers (22%) and half of adults (48%). A quality helmet, correctly worn, can reduce the risk of death in a road crash by over six times, and reduce the risk of brain injury by up to 74%, according to the World Health Organization.

The programme was launched at an event that brought together key governmental stakeholders and partners in Bangkok, including the Thailand Development Research Institute, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation as well as the Thailand Consumer Council, the Royal Thai Police, and the Royal Automobile Association Thailand. The event included a special session with the Parliamentary Road Safety Committee, where the initiative was introduced and launched.

A meeting was held with the Thailand Consumer Council, AIP Foundation, and the FIA Foundation to discuss the new programme.

Aggie Krasnolucka, FIA Foundation Programme Director, said: “Motorcycle riders are most likely to die or sustain a life-changing head injury in a crash, but the safe use of quality helmets reduces the risk of death by over six times. The FIA Foundation is delighted to be working with AIP Foundation in this important initiative – a crucial step in addressing the key issues impacting the safety of motorcycle road users throughout Thailand.”

Programmes Director Aggie Krasnolucka met representatives of the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand (RAAT) with the AIP Foundation.
